Lion's Gate 2026 – What It Is, When It Falls and How to Use It
The Lion's Gate falls on 8 August. The Sun is in Leo, and Sirius, the brightest star in our night sky, returns above the horizon before dawn after several weeks out of sight.
Every year, from around the twentieth of July, the questions start. Do we have anything for the Lion's Gate? Is the Sowilo rune a good fit for this time? Do you have to be a Leo for it to mean anything? We have gathered the answers in one place, along with what actually happens in the sky.
What is the Lion's Gate
The Lion's Gate, the 88 Portal and the Lion's Gate Portal are three names for the same phenomenon: the period around 8 August when two things coincide. The strength of the Sun in Leo and the return of Sirius to the night sky.
The energy of the Lion's Gate
That is where the term energy portal comes from, used interchangeably with the Lion's Gate. It is felt most strongly on 8 August, although the phenomenon itself stretches from 26 July to 12 August.
The Sun enters Leo around 23 July and stays there until 22 August. Leo is a fire sign ruled by the Sun itself, so astrologers describe these weeks as a good time to show yourself to the world exactly as you are.
The return of Sirius
For roughly seventy days a year Sirius is invisible, drowned out by the Sun. Then one August night it reappears low on the horizon, just before dawn. Astronomers call this a heliacal rising. The exact date depends on where you are on Earth.
Astrologically, this moment is described as the point when the Earth, the Sun and Sirius line up. Hence the sense of an energetic window opening.
Sirius in ancient Egypt
In Egypt, the new year was counted from this rising. The star was called Sopdet and was linked with Isis, and its return coincided with the start of the Nile flood. For a civilisation whose entire harvest depended on the river flooding on time, the star was both a calendar and a promise that there would be food. The Egyptians had good reason to wait for it.
The date works anyway. An agreed point in the calendar has its own power, even if we agreed on it ourselves. New Year's Day is a convention too, not a natural event, and somehow that doesn't stop anyone making resolutions.
When exactly the Lion's Gate 2026 falls
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| 26 July | The period begins. In the Dreamspell (Mayan) calendar, the new year after the Day Out of Time (25 July). |
| 8 August | The peak, the Lion's Gate proper. |
| 12 August | The period closes. |
If you don't have the space to focus on it on the 8th itself, the whole week carries a similar quality.
Why the number eight
Written as 8.08, the date gives a double eight. In numerology, eight stands for agency and for the law of cause and effect, meaning that everything we send out into the world comes back to us. Laid on its side, it becomes the lemniscate, the symbol of infinity.
That is where the practice around this date comes from. If eight closes cycles, it helps to know where you are in your own cycle. The Lion's Gate 8.8 Soul Amulet
This pendant was made specifically for this date, in 925 sterling silver, in two versions: gold (gold-plated) and silver (platinum-plated). Its entire design is built on the number eight.

Why an octagon
The octagon has recurred in sacred architecture for centuries, most often in baptisteries and domes. The reason is geometric. The octagon sits exactly between the square and the circle, and in the symbolism of these shapes the square stands for the earth and the circle for the heavens. The in-between shape is therefore read as a passage from one order to another, in other words a gate.
What the dimensions mean
The pendant is 22 mm in diameter. In numerology, 22 is a master number, assigned to people who turn vision into something concrete. It is 0.8 mm thick, so eight again, this time something you feel under your finger rather than see.
The chain is 44 cm with an 8 cm extender. Four and four stand for anchoring, solid ground. Fully extended it measures 52 cm, and 5 plus 2 makes seven, the number of introspection and inner truth. The pendant then sits lower, closer to the solar plexus.
Eight stars
The octagon is surrounded by eight stars, each with eight points and each 1.6 mm across. The number 8 sits at the centre. Each star has its own name and an assigned number.
The idea was for the pendant to be readable. So that after a few weeks of wearing it you know which of these eight things you happen to be looking at. For those who like working with affirmations, we left one sentence to repeat in the product description.
What to do with it
All you need is a quarter of an hour, a sheet of paper and a quiet place. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply and, if you like that kind of ritual, light a candle. Candles in specific colours, incense and the rest of the kit are optional, and more often distract than help.
If you are looking for something more personal
The Lion's Gate amulet is about the date itself, so it suits anyone who marks it. Below are motifs you choose for yourself: for your sign, for your intention or for the practice you keep up every day.
A gift for a Leo
A natural choice for anyone born between 23 July and 22 August, and a ready-made gift for an August birthday. Hang the charm on a charm necklace or on a bracelet you already own.

The Sowilo rune and the Fehu rune
Sowilo is the sixteenth rune of the Elder Futhark, the eighth and last of its second ætt; its shape resembles a lightning bolt and it is assigned to the Sun. In Norse tradition it stood for victory and for seeing your own path. That it happens to be both the eighth and the solar rune is a coincidence, but it would be hard to find a better-suited symbol for a day when the Sun stands in Leo.
If your intention concerns money or work, reach for Fehu, the first rune of the alphabet, which stands for wealth and for what multiplies. For protection during times of change, Algiz is a good fit, and for breakthroughs already under way, Dagaz, the rune of dawn. We have described the meanings of all twenty-four in our guide to Norse runes.

Citrine
A honey-yellow quartz that crystal healing associates with success in material matters. In colour it is the most leonine thing we have, because in sunlight it looks like a drop of amber. If clarity of mind matters more to you, rock crystal often makes a good companion. Wear it on its own or together with a rune.

Tensor bracelet
For people who work with energy every day, August is often the moment to try the Royal Cubit. It is a measure based on the proportions of the Great Pyramid, resonating at around 144 MHz. We have written a separate article on the types of cubits. If you are just starting out, take a look at the basics of tensor jewellery first.

And if you are not a Leo
That doesn't matter. The Sun passes through Leo for everyone; the difference lies in which area of your life you will feel it.
Your Sun sign is one twelfth of the picture; your full date of birth gives a more precise reading. We explain how to do it step by step in our guide to reading the destiny matrix.
Frequently asked questions
When exactly does the Lion's Gate fall in 2026?
The peak falls on 8 August 2026. The whole period runs from 26 July to 12 August.
Do you have to be a Leo?
No. The Sun passes through Leo regardless of your date of birth. People born under this sign may feel this time more strongly, because the Sun then returns to its position in their birth chart.
What do you actually do during the Lion's Gate?
You write down an intention, close one thing you have been putting off and spend a moment outdoors. Everything else is extra. If you enjoy longer rituals, there is nothing stopping you.
What is the 88 Portal?
The same as the Lion's Gate. The name comes from the date 8.08. Online you will also come across the terms Lion's Gate Portal and simply 8.8.
What jewellery suits this period?
The closest to the date itself is the Lion's Gate 8.8 Soul Amulet, because its entire design is built on the number eight. Beyond that, solar motifs: the Leo zodiac sign, the Sowilo rune and citrine. For intentions around money, reach for the Fehu rune.
What is the Lion's Gate 8.8 Soul Amulet made of?
925 sterling silver, in two versions: gold (gold-plated) and silver (platinum-plated). The octagonal pendant is 22 mm in diameter and 0.8 mm thick, on a 44 cm chain with an 8 cm extender.
Is there any science behind the Lion's Gate?
The astronomical facts themselves can be verified. The Sun really does pass through Leo, and Sirius really does return to the morning sky in early August. The meaning given to this belongs to spiritual tradition, and that is how it is best approached.
If I order before 8 August, will it arrive in time?
For products in stock, orders usually ship within 1–2 working days. If you need it by a specific date, write to support@vellees.com and we will check and confirm the timing.
