Lost Cubit in 925 sterling silver, platinum-plated: tensor ring, butterfly back and plate with ear post. In the centre a hand-cut carnelian from India, an orange chalcedony in the colour of a setting sun.

Platinum holds a cool, silver tone and does not darken the way plain silver does. It is a plating, though, so with everyday wear it can rub through at the edges over time. Underneath there remains solid 925 sterling silver.

The colour is given by dispersed iron oxides, hence the whole range from salmon orange to deep red. In ancient Egypt carnelian was linked with Isis and placed in the graves of the dead, and the Romans made signet rings from it, because warm wax does not stick to it.
